What this calculator does

A half-wave dipole is one of the simplest and most common antennas, made from two equal-length wire elements fed at the center. Its resonant length depends on the operating frequency and how fast the radio wave travels along the wire.

The formula used

The classic rule of thumb for a half-wave dipole in free space is total length (feet) = 468 ÷ frequency (MHz), often adjusted by a velocity factor to account for wire thickness and nearby objects. Each leg is simply half of the total length.

Real-world antennas are affected by height above ground, nearby conductors, and wire diameter, so treat the result as a good starting point to trim and tune from, not an exact final measurement.
