What Dimensional Weight Is
Shipping carriers charge based on whichever is greater: a package’s actual weight, or its ‘dimensional weight,’ a size-based weight calculated from its length, width, and height. This protects carriers from underpricing large, lightweight boxes that take up truck and plane space.
The Formula
Dimensional Weight = (Length × Width × Height) ÷ DIM Divisor. The divisor depends on the carrier and service — common values are 139 or 166 for inches and pounds domestically, and 5000 or 6000 for centimeters and kilograms internationally. Check your specific carrier’s published divisor for accurate quotes.
The billable weight used for pricing is the larger of the dimensional weight and the actual scale weight. This tool is for general shipping-cost planning and estimation.
