How Transfer Time Is Estimated
This calculator converts your file size into bits and your connection speed into bits per second, then divides one by the other to estimate how long the transfer should take under ideal conditions.
The Formula
Time (seconds) = (File Size in bits) ÷ (Speed in bits per second). File sizes are converted using decimal units (1 MB = 1,000,000 bytes, matching how most ISPs advertise speed), and 1 byte equals 8 bits.
- Real-world transfers are usually slower than the theoretical maximum due to network overhead, other traffic, and server limits.
- Wi-Fi, VPNs, and shared connections can all reduce actual throughput well below your rated speed.
- This tool is for general planning and estimation purposes only.
