What the current divider rule does
When current flows into two resistors connected in parallel, it splits between them in inverse proportion to their resistance — more current flows through the path of lower resistance.
The formula
For two parallel resistors, the current through R1 is I1 = I × (R2 / (R1 + R2)), and the current through R2 is I2 = I × (R1 / (R1 + R2)), where I is the total current entering the parallel combination. The two branch currents always add back up to the total current.
