What Coulomb’s Law describes

Coulomb’s Law describes the electrostatic force between two point electric charges. It states that the force is proportional to the product of the two charges and inversely proportional to the square of the distance between them: F = k·|q₁·q₂| / r², where k is Coulomb’s constant (approximately 8.99×10⁹ N·m²/C²).

How this calculator works

Enter both charges in microcoulombs and the distance between them in meters. The calculator converts the charges to coulombs, applies Coulomb’s Law to find the magnitude of the force in newtons, and indicates whether the charges attract (opposite signs) or repel (same sign).

This formula assumes point charges (or charges on spheres small relative to the distance between them) in a vacuum or air; the presence of other materials between the charges can reduce the force. For general educational purposes.
