Why carpool?
Sharing a ride splits the fuel cost of a trip among multiple riders instead of one person bearing the full cost, while also reducing the number of vehicles on the road, parking demand, and emissions per person.
How the savings are calculated
This calculator first finds your total weekly fuel cost using Fuel Cost = (Distance ÷ MPG) × Fuel Price, then divides that cost by the number of riders sharing the trip. The difference between driving alone and splitting the cost is your per-person savings, projected to monthly and yearly totals.
This estimate covers fuel costs only — it doesn’t include wear-and-tear, insurance, tolls, or parking, which carpooling can also reduce. Actual savings will vary with real fuel prices, route, and driving conditions. For general planning purposes only.
