Why the center of mass matters
A car’s longitudinal center of mass (CoM) location relative to its axles affects handling balance, braking behavior, and traction, which is why it’s commonly measured for racing setup and vehicle dynamics analysis.
The formula
With the car on scales at each axle, the CoM distance from the front axle is found using a moment balance: Distance from front = (Rear Axle Weight ÷ Total Weight) × Wheelbase. This works because the axle carrying more weight is closer to the CoM.
This calculation only finds the longitudinal (front-to-rear) position, not the height (vertical CoM), which requires a different measurement method involving tilting the vehicle. Results are for general reference and educational purposes.
