How camera field of view is calculated
A lens’s angle of view depends on both the camera sensor’s physical size and the lens’s focal length. Wider sensors or shorter focal lengths produce a wider field of view, while longer focal lengths narrow it (zoom in).
The formula used is: Field of View = 2 × arctan(Sensor Dimension ÷ (2 × Focal Length)), calculated separately for the horizontal and vertical directions using sensor width and height.
- A full-frame sensor is 36mm × 24mm; APS-C and micro four-thirds sensors are smaller and produce a narrower field of view at the same focal length.
- The calculator also estimates the physical width and height of the visible frame at a given subject distance, using simple trigonometry.
This tool provides estimates for general photography and videography planning purposes; exact results can vary slightly by lens design and distortion.
