What is buoyancy?

Buoyancy is the upward force a fluid exerts on an object submerged in or floating on it, resulting from pressure differences between the top and bottom of the object. It’s why ships float and helium balloons rise.

The formula

Archimedes’ principle gives the buoyant force as Fb = ρ × g × V, where ρ is the fluid’s density, g is gravitational acceleration, and V is the volume of fluid displaced by the object. If you also enter the object’s weight, the calculator shows the net force and whether it would float (net force ≥ 0) or sink.

This calculation assumes the object is fully or partially submerged with a known displaced volume; a floating object displaces only enough fluid to equal its own weight, so the true displaced volume can be less than the object’s total volume. This calculator is for general physics education.
