What this calculator does
The asphalt calculator estimates the tonnage of hot mix asphalt needed to pave a driveway, parking area, or path, based on its size and how thick the asphalt layer will be.
The formula
Volume in cubic feet is area (length x width) multiplied by paving thickness (converted from inches to feet). Hot mix asphalt is commonly estimated at a density of about 145 pounds per cubic foot once compacted, a widely used industry approximation. Multiplying volume by that density and dividing by 2000 pounds per ton gives the tonnage to order.
Residential driveways are typically paved 2 to 3 inches thick over a compacted gravel base. Actual density varies by asphalt mix design — your paving contractor or supplier can confirm the exact density and order quantity for your project.
