What is arrow speed?
Arrow speed is the velocity of an arrow leaving the bow, usually measured in feet per second (fps) with a chronograph placed a known distance from the bow.
How this calculator works
Speed is calculated as distance ÷ time, the same principle a chronograph uses. From that speed, the calculator finds kinetic energy using KE = (weight in grains × speed2) ÷ 450,240, and momentum using a similar grains-based conversion. These are the standard formulas archers use to compare arrow setups for hunting and target performance.
Actual arrow speed varies with bow draw weight, draw length, and arrow spine, so use a chronograph reading whenever precision matters. This tool is for general reference and educational purposes only.
