What is zakat?

Zakat is an obligatory annual charitable contribution in Islam, calculated as 2.5% of a Muslim’s zakatable wealth once it meets or exceeds a minimum threshold called the nisab, and has been held for a full lunar year (hawl). Zakatable wealth typically includes cash, savings, gold, silver, business inventory, and investments, minus debts due for immediate repayment.

How this calculator works

Add up your cash and bank savings, the current market value of any gold or silver you own, investments or business assets, and money owed to you, then subtract debts and bills you currently owe. If the resulting net wealth is at or above the nisab threshold, the calculator applies the standard 2.5% zakat rate to find your zakat due.

  • The nisab is traditionally based on the value of 87.48 grams of gold or 612.36 grams of silver, and changes with current market prices, so update the Nisab Threshold field with a current value from a trusted source or your local scholar/organization.
  • Some scholars and schools of thought differ slightly on which assets count and how the nisab is calculated.
