What waist-to-hip ratio measures

Waist-to-hip ratio (WHR) compares the circumference of your waist to the circumference of your hips. It is used as a simple indicator of body fat distribution, since carrying more fat around the waist (‘apple’ shape) is generally associated with higher health risk than carrying it around the hips (‘pear’ shape).

How this calculator works

Enter your waist circumference (measured at the narrowest point, usually just above the belly button) and hip circumference (measured at the widest point). The calculator divides waist by hip to get your ratio, then compares it against commonly cited World Health Organization reference ranges, which differ slightly by sex: for women, below 0.80 is lower risk and above 0.85 is higher risk; for men, below 0.90 is lower risk and above 1.0 is higher risk.

WHR is a screening measurement, not a diagnosis. This tool is for general educational and planning purposes only and is not a substitute for professional medical advice.
