What is the van’t Hoff factor?
The van’t Hoff factor (i) describes how many particles a solute actually produces when it dissolves in solution. A substance that stays intact (like glucose) has i close to 1, while one that dissociates into ions (like NaCl, which splits into Na+ and Cl−) has a higher i.
How this calculator works
This calculator finds the experimental van’t Hoff factor from a freezing point depression measurement, using:
i = ΔT(observed) ÷ (Kf × m)
where ΔT(observed) is the measured freezing point depression, Kf is the solvent’s cryoscopic (freezing point depression) constant, and m is the solute’s molality. The denominator, Kf × m, is the freezing point depression that would be expected if the solute did not dissociate at all (i = 1).
A calculated i near 1 suggests the solute doesn’t dissociate, a value near 2 suggests it splits into two particles (like a simple 1:1 salt), and values below the theoretical maximum often indicate incomplete dissociation or ion pairing. This tool is for general chemistry education purposes.
