What TRIR measures
The Total Recordable Incident Rate (TRIR) is a standard workplace safety metric that estimates how many recordable injuries or illnesses occur per 100 full-time workers over a one-year period, allowing organizations to compare safety performance across time periods or against industry benchmarks.
The formula used
This calculator uses the standard OSHA-based formula: TRIR = (Number of Recordable Incidents × 200,000) ÷ Total Hours Worked by All Employees. The constant 200,000 represents the approximate number of hours worked in a year by 100 full-time employees (100 workers × 40 hours/week × 50 weeks).
A lower TRIR generally indicates fewer recordable incidents relative to hours worked. Recordable incidents typically include injuries or illnesses that require medical treatment beyond first aid, result in lost work time, restricted work, or death, as defined by applicable workplace safety regulations.
