How torque and RPM relate to horsepower

Horsepower is a measure of the rate at which work is done, while torque measures rotational force. The two are linked through rotational speed using the standard automotive formula: Horsepower = (Torque in lb-ft ร— RPM) รท 5252.

The constant 5252 comes from the mathematical relationship between horsepower, torque in pound-feet, and angular velocity in radians per second (5252 = 33,000 รท 2ฯ€, rounded). This formula is why torque and horsepower curves always cross at exactly 5,252 RPM on a dynamometer chart.

This calculator is intended for general automotive reference and educational purposes; real-world engine output also depends on factors like drivetrain losses, altitude, and temperature that a dynamometer accounts for but this simple formula does not.
