What titer means

In volumetric analysis, the titer of a standard solution is the mass of a specific analyte that reacts exactly with one milliliter of that titrant. Expressing a titrant this way makes it fast to convert a titration’s volume reading directly into a mass of analyte, without redoing the stoichiometry every time.

The formula used

Titer (mg/mL) = titrant molarity (mol/L) × analyte molar mass (g/mol) × stoichiometric factor, where the stoichiometric factor is the moles of analyte that react per mole of titrant according to the balanced equation. Multiplying the titer by the volume of titrant actually used in a titration gives the total mass of analyte present in the sample.

  • The stoichiometric factor is 1 for a simple 1:1 reaction (for example, HCl reacting with NaOH).
  • Use the analyte’s molar mass, not the titrant’s, when computing titer.
