What specific volume is
Specific volume is the amount of space a given mass of a substance occupies. It is the inverse of density and is widely used in thermodynamics, engineering, and chemistry to describe how gases, liquids, and solids expand or compress under different conditions.
The formula
Specific volume is calculated as v = V ÷ m, where V is the total volume of the substance and m is its mass. Because it is the reciprocal of density (ρ = m ÷ V), a substance with a high specific volume has a low density, and vice versa. This calculator also reports the equivalent density for convenience.
