The method
Average speaking rates for prepared speech generally range from about 110 to 170 words per minute, depending on style and delivery. The calculator divides your word count by the chosen pace to get a base time, then adds a percentage buffer to account for natural pauses, emphasis, and audience reactions, since real delivery is almost always slower than a flat reading-speed calculation.
Actual delivery time will vary by speaker and by the amount of ad-libbing, slides, or audience interaction involved; use this as a general planning estimate rather than an exact timer, and always do at least one full read-through rehearsal for anything time-sensitive.
