Sound Wavelength Formula

Like all waves, sound’s wavelength, frequency, and speed are related by λ = v/f, where v is the speed of sound in the medium and f is the frequency in hertz. In dry air at 20°C, sound travels at roughly 343 m/s, but this speed changes with temperature, humidity, and medium (much faster in water or steel).

Lower frequencies produce longer wavelengths — a 20 Hz bass note has a wavelength of about 17 meters, while a 20,000 Hz tone is just under 2 centimeters. This relationship underlies how speaker and room dimensions interact with different frequencies.
