What This Calculator Does
The Slope Calculator finds the steepness and direction of the straight line that passes through two points, (x1, y1) and (x2, y2). Slope is one of the most fundamental ideas in algebra and coordinate geometry, describing how much a line rises or falls as it moves across the graph.
The Formula
Slope (m) is calculated as the change in y divided by the change in x, often remembered as “rise over run”: m = (y2 – y1) / (x2 – x1). A positive slope means the line rises left to right, a negative slope means it falls, a slope of zero is a horizontal line, and a vertical line (where x1 equals x2) has an undefined slope.
What the Extra Results Mean
Alongside the slope, this tool reports the angle of incline (the slope expressed as an angle in degrees), the straight-line distance between the two points, and the y-intercept of the line if it were extended to cross the y-axis. These extra values are useful for graphing, physics problems involving ramps or grades, and general algebra homework.
