What This Calculator Does

Sensible heat is the thermal energy exchanged by a substance when its temperature changes without a change of phase (such as heating air or water without boiling or freezing it). It’s a core calculation in HVAC, thermodynamics, and everyday heating and cooling problems.

The Formula

The calculator uses Q = m × c × ΔT, where m is the mass of the substance, c is its specific heat capacity, and ΔT is the temperature change. The default specific heat value shown (1005 J/(kg·K)) is for dry air at typical conditions; substitute the correct value for other materials.

This formula applies only within a single phase (e.g., all liquid or all gas); it does not account for the extra energy needed during melting, freezing, boiling, or condensation. For general educational and planning purposes.
