What the Reynolds number tells you

The Reynolds number (Re) is a dimensionless value used in fluid mechanics to predict whether a flow will be smooth and orderly (laminar) or chaotic and mixing (turbulent). It compares the inertial forces in a fluid to its viscous forces.

The formula

Reynolds number is calculated as Re = (ρ × u × L) / μ, where ρ is fluid density, u is flow velocity, L is a characteristic length such as pipe diameter, and μ is dynamic viscosity. As a general guideline for flow in a pipe, Re below about 2300 is considered laminar, values between roughly 2300 and 4000 are transitional, and values above 4000 are turbulent.

This tool is for general engineering and educational estimates. Real transition points depend on pipe roughness, entrance effects, and other factors, so use it as a planning guide rather than a precise engineering certification.
