What this calculator estimates

This calculator projects how many years a retirement balance can support annual withdrawals, given an expected rate of investment return and an assumed rate of inflation that increases your withdrawal amount each year to keep pace with the cost of living.

How it works

Each simulated year, the calculator subtracts your withdrawal from the balance, then grows the remaining balance by your expected annual return. Your withdrawal amount is then increased by the inflation rate for the following year. This repeats until the balance reaches zero or 100 years have passed.

  • If your expected return consistently exceeds your withdrawal rate plus inflation, the balance may never run out within the modeled range.
  • This is a simplified model with a constant assumed return; real portfolios experience variable returns and market downturns.
