What is resting heart rate?

Your resting heart rate (RHR) is the number of times your heart beats per minute while you are at complete rest, such as right after waking up and before getting out of bed. It is one of the simplest indicators of overall cardiovascular fitness.

How this calculator works

Count your pulse for 15, 30, or 60 seconds while sitting or lying still, then enter the number of beats and the counting time. The calculator scales that count up to beats per minute (bpm). A normal adult resting heart rate typically falls between 60 and 100 bpm, while well-conditioned athletes often see readings well below 60 bpm.

This calculator also estimates a common maximum heart rate figure using the widely used 220 minus age formula, shown for general reference alongside your RHR.

  • Measure first thing in the morning for the most consistent readings.
  • Caffeine, stress, illness, and recent activity can temporarily raise your pulse.

This tool is for general educational and fitness-tracking purposes only and does not diagnose any medical condition. Consult a healthcare professional about unusual or persistent readings.
