What the real interest rate measures

The real interest rate reflects the actual purchasing-power return on a loan or investment after stripping out the effect of inflation. It tells savers and borrowers whether money is genuinely gaining or losing value over time, not just growing in nominal terms.

The formula

This calculator applies the exact Fisher equation: Real Rate = ((1 + Nominal Rate) ÷ (1 + Inflation Rate)) – 1, and also shows the commonly used simple approximation, Real Rate ≈ Nominal Rate – Inflation Rate, which works well when rates are low but becomes less accurate at higher rates or inflation levels.
