What this calculator does
The Rat Cage Calculator estimates the minimum floor space and volume needed for a group of pet rats, since rats are highly social and are typically kept in same-sex pairs or groups.
How the recommendation works
Common pet-rat welfare guidance recommends at least 200 square inches (about 1.4 square feet) of floor space per rat, with at least 24 inches of height to allow for climbing shelves and enrichment, since rats are active climbers as well as ground dwellers. Multi-level cages can help meet the volume requirement without needing a huge footprint.
