What This Calculator Does

This calculator finds the average velocity of a fluid flowing through a circular pipe given the volumetric flow rate and the pipe’s inside diameter, which is useful for checking against recommended velocity ranges in piping design.

The Formula

It rearranges the continuity equation Q = A × v to solve for velocity: v = Q ÷ A, where A is the pipe’s circular cross-sectional area calculated from the inside diameter as π(d/2)².

  • Higher velocities generally increase frictional pressure loss and the risk of erosion or noise, so many piping standards recommend staying within a target velocity band for a given fluid and pipe material.
  • This calculation gives the bulk average velocity; local velocity varies across the pipe cross-section, especially in laminar flow.
