š Nernst Equation Calculator
Find the actual cell potential of an electrochemical cell at non-standard concentrations and temperature using the Nernst equation.
What the Nernst equation does
The Nernst equation relates the actual voltage produced by an electrochemical cell to its standard cell potential, the temperature, the number of electrons transferred, and the current concentrations (or pressures) of the reactants and products, summarized in the reaction quotient Q.
The formula
E = E° − (RT / nF) · ln(Q), where R is the gas constant (8.314 J/(mol·K)), T is temperature in kelvin, n is the number of moles of electrons transferred, and F is Faraday’s constant (96,485 C/mol). At 25°C this simplifies to the familiar shortcut E = E° − (0.0592/n)·log(Q).
Note: Q must reflect the actual reaction as written (products over reactants, each raised to its stoichiometric coefficient). This tool is for general chemistry education and planning purposes.
