What This Calculator Does
The tile calculator estimates how many individual tiles and full boxes you need to cover a floor or wall, based on the room’s area, the size of a single tile, and a waste allowance for cuts and breakage.
How the Calculation Works
Room area is found by multiplying room length by width, then a waste percentage is added on top to account for cut pieces, pattern layout, and breakage. That adjusted area is divided by the area of a single tile (its length times width, converted to square feet) to get the raw tile count, which is rounded up to a whole tile. Finally, that count is divided by the number of tiles per box and rounded up again, since tile is normally purchased by the full box.
Tips for Tile Projects
- A 10 percent waste allowance suits simple layouts; use 15 percent or more for diagonal patterns, small rooms, or intricate cuts around fixtures.
- Buy all tile for a room from the same production lot/batch to avoid subtle color and shade variations.
- Keep a few leftover tiles after the project for future repairs, since matching discontinued tile later can be difficult.
