What This Calculator Does

This tool finds a substance’s molar heat capacity — the amount of heat needed to raise the temperature of one mole of that substance by one kelvin (or one degree Celsius, since the two scales share the same size degree).

The Formula

Molar heat capacity is calculated by rearranging the basic heat equation q = n × C × ΔT to solve for C: C = q ÷ (n × ΔT), where q is the heat absorbed or released (in joules), n is the amount of substance (in moles), and ΔT is the temperature change (in kelvin or degrees Celsius, always entered as a positive magnitude).

A Few Notes

  • Because a change in temperature (ΔT) is the same size in kelvin and Celsius, you can use either scale as long as you’re consistent about the size of the change.
  • This calculator assumes no phase change occurs during heating or cooling; heat capacity calculations don’t apply across a melting or boiling transition.
  • Intended for general chemistry education and lab-planning purposes.
