Magnetic Permeability

Magnetic permeability (μ) describes how easily a material supports the formation of a magnetic field within it, defined as μ = B/H, where B is the magnetic flux density and H is the magnetic field strength. Relative permeability, μr = μ/μ0, compares a material’s permeability to that of free space (μ0 = 4π×10-7 H/m).

Ferromagnetic materials like iron have relative permeability in the hundreds to thousands, strongly concentrating magnetic field lines, while most other materials (paramagnetic, diamagnetic) have relative permeability very close to 1. This property is central to designing transformer cores, electric motors, and magnetic shielding.
