What this calculator does

The lumber calculator finds the total board feet in a stack of lumber, plus an estimated total cost, from the thickness, width, and length of each board and how many you have.

The formula

One board foot is the standard unit for measuring lumber volume, equal to a board 12 inches wide, 12 inches long, and 1 inch thick. Board feet per board is calculated as thickness (in) times width (in) times length (ft), divided by 12. Multiplying by quantity gives the total board feet for your whole order, and multiplying that by a price per board foot gives an estimated cost.

This tool is for general estimating. Actual lumber pricing may be quoted per linear foot or per piece rather than per board foot, so confirm units with your supplier before ordering.
