What LDL cholesterol is
LDL (low-density lipoprotein) cholesterol is often called ‘bad’ cholesterol because high levels are linked to plaque buildup in arteries. Most standard lipid panels report total cholesterol, HDL, and triglycerides directly, and LDL is commonly calculated rather than measured directly.
The Friedewald equation
This calculator uses the widely-used Friedewald equation: LDL = Total Cholesterol – HDL – (Triglycerides / 5), with all values in mg/dL. This formula estimates VLDL cholesterol as triglycerides divided by 5, and is considered reliable only when triglycerides are below 400 mg/dL; above that threshold, a direct LDL lab measurement is needed.
