What this IRA calculator does

An Individual Retirement Account (IRA) lets your contributions grow through compound returns over many years. This calculator projects your future balance by adding your annual contribution each year and applying your expected rate of return to the running total, from your current age until your planned retirement age.

How the math works

Each year, the calculator takes your balance, grows it by your expected annual return, then adds your contribution for that year. Repeating this for every year between now and retirement produces an estimated ending balance. The difference between that balance and your total contributions is your estimated investment growth.

  • Actual IRA contribution limits are set annually by the IRS and vary by age and account type.
  • Real returns will vary year to year and are never guaranteed.
