What this calculator does
When inductors are connected in series (with no magnetic coupling between them), their inductances simply add together, similar to resistors in series.
The formula used
For inductors in series, Ltotal = L1 + L2 + L3 and so on. Enter your inductor values (leave any you don’t need at zero) and the calculator adds them directly.
This calculation assumes the inductors are far enough apart, or oriented so that they don’t magnetically couple with each other; coupled inductors need a more advanced mutual-inductance formula that adds or subtracts a coupling term. This tool is for general electronics planning and education.
