What this calculator does

An inductor stores energy in its magnetic field whenever current flows through it. This calculator finds that stored energy from the inductor’s inductance and the current passing through it.

The formula used

The energy stored in an inductor is E = ½ × L × I², where E is energy in joules, L is inductance in henries, and I is current in amperes. Energy grows with the square of the current, so doubling the current quadruples the stored energy for the same inductor.

This tool is for general electronics planning and education, useful for understanding switching converters, chokes, and inductive energy storage.
