What a high-pass filter does

A high-pass filter lets frequencies above a certain point pass through while attenuating frequencies below it. The simplest version is a single resistor and capacitor (RC) arranged so the capacitor blocks low-frequency signals more than high-frequency ones.

The formula used

The cutoff frequency (also called the -3 dB point) of a simple RC high-pass filter is fc = 1 / (2πRC), where R is resistance in ohms and C is capacitance in farads. Below this frequency, the signal is progressively attenuated; above it, most of the signal passes through.
