What this calculator does

The gravel driveway calculator estimates the volume and weight of gravel needed to cover a driveway at a given depth, plus a rough material cost.

The formula

Volume in cubic feet equals length times width times depth (converted to feet). Dividing by 27 converts cubic feet to cubic yards, since gravel is typically sold by the cubic yard or by the ton. Multiplying cubic yards by the material’s density (tons per cubic yard) gives the estimated weight to order.

  • A depth of 4-6 inches is common for a driveway base layer.
  • Density varies by material type and compaction, so actual tonnage from a supplier may differ slightly.

This tool is for general planning purposes; always confirm quantities and pricing with your gravel supplier before ordering.
