⚖️ Gini Coefficient Calculator
Enter the share of total income earned by each fifth (quintile) of the population, from poorest to richest, to estimate the Gini coefficient of income inequality.
What Is the Gini Coefficient?
The Gini coefficient is a standard measure of income (or wealth) inequality within a population, ranging from 0 (perfect equality, everyone earns the same) to 1 (perfect inequality, one person earns all the income). It is one of the most widely cited inequality statistics used by economists and international organizations.
The Method
This calculator uses the quintile-share method: you enter the percentage of total income earned by each fifth of the population, from poorest to richest. The calculator builds an approximate Lorenz curve from the cumulative income shares and computes the Gini coefficient as twice the area between the Lorenz curve and the line of perfect equality, using the trapezoidal rule.
Note: This is an approximation based on five data points (quintiles); official statistics agencies typically use more granular household-level data for a more precise estimate. This tool is for general educational purposes only.
