What Is Gay-Lussac’s Law?

Gay-Lussac’s Law states that for a fixed amount of gas at constant volume, pressure is directly proportional to absolute temperature. It explains why, for example, a sealed container’s pressure rises when heated.

The Formula

P1/T1 = P2/T2, so P2 = P1 × (T2/T1), where temperatures must be in an absolute scale (Kelvin). This calculator converts your Celsius inputs to Kelvin automatically.
