What a frequency distribution shows

A frequency distribution organizes raw data into groups, or classes, and shows how many data points fall into each group. This makes patterns in the data much easier to see than a long list of individual numbers.

How this calculator works

Enter your data values and choose how many classes (bins) you want. The calculator finds the range of your data (maximum minus minimum), divides that range by the number of classes to get the class width, and then sorts each data point into its class to count the frequency of each one. It reports the class width, the range, and the frequency of the most common (modal) class.

Choosing the right number of classes is partly a judgment call: too few classes hides detail, while too many creates a scattered picture. A common starting point is 5 to 10 classes for small to medium data sets. This tool is intended for general statistics education.
