What the electric field formula tells you

The electric field produced by a point charge follows Coulomb’s Law: E = k|Q| / r², where k is Coulomb’s constant (about 8.9875 × 109 N·m²/C²), Q is the source charge, and r is the distance from the charge to the point being measured.

How this calculator works

Enter the magnitude of the point charge (in microcoulombs) and the distance from it. The calculator converts the charge to coulombs, applies Coulomb’s Law, and reports the electric field strength in newtons per coulomb, noting whether the field points outward (for a positive charge) or inward (for a negative charge).

This formula applies to idealized point charges; for extended or non-uniform charge distributions, the field must be found by integrating over the whole distribution. This calculator is for general physics education purposes.
