What this calculator does
The five number summary is a quick way to describe the spread and center of a dataset using five values: the minimum, the first quartile (Q1), the median, the third quartile (Q3), and the maximum. It is the foundation of a box-and-whisker plot.
How the calculation works
The calculator sorts your values from smallest to largest, then finds the median (the middle value). It splits the data at the median into a lower half and an upper half, and finds the median of each half to get Q1 and Q3. The minimum and maximum are simply the smallest and largest entered values, and the interquartile range (Q3 minus Q1) shows the spread of the middle 50% of the data.
Enter at least 2 values; leaving optional value fields blank simply excludes them from the calculation. This tool is for general and educational use.
